San Diu Women improving their quality of life via sustainable production
In September 2011, C&E Center organized an inception workshop in Dong Bua village, Tam Quan commune, Vinh Phuc Province. Participating in the workshop were local stakeholders such as Tam Dao National Park, District agriculture promotion station, representatives of departments, unions, communes, villages and women in the Women and Environment Club. Through the workshop, the local authorities and people became aware of the project key objectives, contents, activities and beneficiaries as well as the advantages and disadvantages in local economic development. Based on these, they found the most suitable solutions to improve and enhance the quality of life of people in a sustainable direction.
According to the aspirations of San Diu women in Dong Bua Village, C&E organized two training workshops in September and October in the areas of sustainable development, environment-friendly production, health and environmental sanitation, safe vegetable production techniques, hygiene livestock raising techniques, teamwork skills and production planning. During the training, Don Bua Village Women Club established four small "bamboo” groups, each of which had 15 members. Each group elected a group leader and a secretary to facilitate their activities and production.
After the training, women took initial steps in applying the knowledge learnt in the production of their families and in the locality. For example, women received project support in terms of Chou chou seedlings and poultry breads and applied the lessons learnt to grow vegetables safely and raise poultry hygienically to ensure sustainable production. Besides women also evoked a sense of environmental protection and green-clean-and-beautiful living, particularly via regular clean-ups of their houses, village and public places.
In the future C&E will assist members of the club to enhance their capacity in activities and group work, exchanges, building group regulations and charters, production planning and sustainable consumption. In addition, the Women and Environment Club will also receive support in kind such as radio speakers and an environmental bookshelf. These are initial results of the club. It is expected that during their project participation, members of Dong Bua Village Women and Environmental Club will develop long-term activity plans to carry out regular and effective activities which are attached to their life and sustainable production.
