TRAINING COURSE : RAISING AWARENESS AND BUILDING CAPACITY ABOUT THE PARTICIPATION OF LOCAL PEOPLE IN LIVELIHOOD AND MANAGEMENT SKILL DEVELOPMENT

Organized the training course on raising awareness and building capacity about the participation of local people in livelihood and management skill development in Areh village, Ta Lu commune, Dong Giang District, Quang Nam Province. This project is conducted by the Center for Development of Community Initiative and Environment and sponsored by Fund of Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung in Southeast Asia.

31 Kotu club members (73% of them were women), together with experts, shared experiences and researched local cultivation models on sloping land and how to plant spinach and mustard cabbage. Moreover, the members discussed and agreed on forest protection regulations at the village level, and  practiced exercises related to work management or finance management.

To the local people in mountainous areas, their production area are almost exclusively located on mountains and hills. Therefore they have experience in knowing which trees and plants are suitable for specific terrain. For example, in low hills they usually grow cassava or fruit trees. On the top of sloping hills there will be natural forests to avoid washout and soil erosion. Following that, they will plant some industrial trees, such asacacia, …In the first couple of yoears, they will plant them together with cassava in order to increase profit. Next, in lower-lying area they will intercrop some fruit trees or food crops (orange, banana, jack fruit, bean, pineapple…). If the family have enough land and resources, they will plant some other herbal/medicinal plants. At the even lower altitudes  they will plant sugarcane, bamboo in combination  with livestock such as cattle and poultry. At the lowest position, they will plant rice and create ponds to harvest fish.

In regards to work and finance management, almost every member attending the training session said that they had never ever built a budget or plan. All of them also said that they could not control the money earned or spent. The training course helped to share the simplest way to make a plan to manage work and finances so that they can easily adapt.

Every member was satisfied with the content of the training. The knowledge and skills learnt will be very helpful to them in the future. All participants want the project to support some model for them to increase livelihood and improve their living conditions in the future.
